Myanmar & Thailand

An Asian adventure in two neighboring but very different countries.

Challenge & Paradise

Asia is very different to Western World in many ways. Their landscaping is stunning, the food is exotic, the weather is very changeable, the culture is shocking. To learn about their way of living is very interesting and very enriching. Asia always presents you with new challenges and a good attitude is essential to overcome them.

2 friends

For this trip I joined my very good friend Javi. He have had experience backpacking on Asia before. Together we went to discover this 2 countries.

Material

We only used our 45L backpacks, we planned to change locations very often and needed to be light.

Transport

Driving in Asia is very brave, we usually take puplic transport in cities and rent motorbikes in low-density locations.

Food/Drinks

My favourite part of Asia is the food, it is very easy to find tasty meals anywhere, usually very healthy low fat food. Precaution with the hygiene!

Myanmar an uncrowded adventure

Javi had traveled through Asia on numerous occasions, and like any fan of the continent he was in search of an unexplored territory, or at least one that was not overcrowded. Myanmar met those requirements, however from my experience it had advantages and disadvantages.

Things You Don't Want to Miss

Trail Highlights

This time we activate the adventure mode. We simply bought the plane tickets to Yangon, Myanmar, and every night we decide what to do the next day.

My favourites, Min Kun Pagoda (Myanmar) and Koh Nang Yuan Island (Thailand). However I felt in love with enthire Thailand, were I had the feeling to be in a tropical paradise all the time.

RECOMMENDATION! Avoid asian summer (April to June), temperatures can get very high!

Highlights

Backpacking is Asia is not maybe for everyone, but if you dont mind to carry your things, sleep in places where you did not show to your mother and eating in places of questionable hygiene, it is a trip you must to do.  We spent 774€ per person in 24 days trip, sharing common spenses between 2 persons, flights in February-March included. Crazy price! No?!

Food & Drinks

Food in Asia is cheap, however Javi thought it was expensive, prices had risen a lot since his last visit, on our trip we were able to find padthai for 120 TBH, which in 2019 was a little less than €3. The food is not spicy unless you ask for it, and since I traveled there it has become my favorite food!

Necessary Gear

Our plan was backpacking, we were going light, with a 45L backpack that we could take with us in the cabin of the plane, a swimsuit, 3 or 4 changes of clothes and the camera, of course. Don't worry about falling short, clothes are infinitely cheaper there, in fact there are many people who travel with an empty suitcase to buy clothes there, also most of the time you will be in a swimsuit. I took the opportunity to buy my first flower shirts.

  • There we moved by bus to change cities (€7), boat (350 Baths/€10) to enter the islands and plane to change countries. Locally we rented motorcycles that cost us 200TBH per day (€5.50)

  • We frequently changed accommodation, looking for hostels with shared rooms (7€/person/day) or when we were a little more tired a private room (15€/person/day) 2019.

  • Definitely always in a swimsuit and flowered shirt.
